I had been eyeing up a visit to Denver for quite a while. It was one of the places in the US that I had not yet been, unless you consider a layover at their airport a visit to the city. As we planned our long weekend in Colorado we thought that finishing our trip in Denver would be the perfect way to relax after hiking and biking in Boulder, Breckenridge and Aspen. I have to say, Denver has a lot to offer in terms of food, activities and beautiful landmarks! I only had one-night there but I made the most of it and here is what I recommend if you’re traveling to Denver.

Where to Stay

Without question I would recommend The Maven hotel in downtown Denver’s Dairy Block. This hotel opened in the spring and has a beautiful, wide-open lobby that greets you upon your arrival. It is really close to a lot of great restaurants, Coor’s Field and Union Station. The service was amazing and everyone was more than helpful any time that I had a question. We ended up with one of their Journeyman King rooms on the top floor which also had a balcony that faced Coor’s Field. Since we were there on July 3rd, the ballpark featured fireworks for the 4th of July holiday after the game. It was the PERFECT view! The rooms have huge windows with high ceilings and seating like swings that hang from the ceiling! The bedding was comfortable and the bathrooms were beautiful. I could go on and on about this room. The best part was that they had delicious pour-over coffee right in the room!

One of the other great features that I liked about staying at The Maven was that you got a free signature cocktail at Poka Lola Social Club, which is their lobby bar. This lounge offers some fun, vintage cocktails and I thought that it was so nice of them to invite their guests in for a complimentary drink! It was perfect to grab and go sit up on our balcony to watch the fireworks.

The Maven also offers a fitness center for their guests, and they are connected to The Oxford Club which is a spa and salon. You can also dine at Kachina, their Southwestern restaurant but I’ll discuss that in more detail below.

Overall it was an amazing experience and I would recommend that anyone heading to Denver check out The Maven hotel to spend their nights.

Where to Eat

As I mentioned above, The Maven has a restaurant called Kachina Southwestern Grill. We enjoyed dinner here that night that we stayed and were treated to some amazingly unique food. The serve for every meal of the day and have a variety of tacos, steaks and empanadas. One of the unique things about their tacos is that they are served on Indian Fry Bread which is essentially a chewy/doughy flatbread wrapped around the taco fillings. I have never tried this before but I will say that it was delicious. We also tried their trio of guacamole which offered flavors that were mild to spicy. And I couldn’t pass up a delicious glass of their red sangria. Even if you’re not staying at The Maven I would recommend trying out Kachina Southwestern Grill for unique, but delicious dining experience.

I was also itching to try a unique donut shop while in Denver so we took a walk over to Habit Donut Dispensary where they offer unique donut flavors that fit with their very Denver theme. Half of the shop is for donuts and the other half is a bar, a coffee bar in the morning and a regular bar in the evening. It had a fun and interesting vibe, albeit a little strange to be in a bar at 9:00 in the morning. I ordered the salted caramel and a coffee and both were satisfactory. If you’re a donut aficionado then I would make the stop.

We also checked out Avanti Food and Beverage which is a smaller food hall offering a variety of food options and a wider variety of craft beers. The concept was really interesting and made me wish we had something similar in Milwaukee. There were 2 levels with a bar on each level and food vendors on both levels. They offer indoor dining areas and outdoor lounge seating and it’s the perfect place to gather with friends. Another option for a food hall would be the Denver Central Market. We never made it over that way because we ran out of time but I have heard great things!
